Donald Driver Announces Retirement

You just want to play the game. I love the game, but I only love one team,” Driver said, according to Fox Sports Wisconsin. Driver, who had just eight receptions for 77 yards in 13 games last season, said if he gets “that itch” to return, “it would only be for the green and gold.” Driver, 38, is the Packers’ all-time leader in receptions (743) and yards receiving (10,137). He also had 61 touchdown catches after making the team as a seventh-round draft pick out of Alcorn State in 1999. Driver said he talked to other players who decided to continue their careers with another team after spending their entire careers with one franchise and “every guy I’ve talked to said they wish they never went to another team.” Kevin Dorsey and Charles Johnson , two rookie receivers drafted by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2013 draft to help replace Driver, played in Sunday’s softball game. Mary Langenfeld/USA TODAY Sports Donald Driver had a street named for him in Green Bay in February when he retired.

I’m the same skinny little kid who walked in 1999. I’ll be the same skinny kid — well, grown man — who walked out in 2013. Nothing changes for me. I’m the same person and never will change.” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Driver’s 61-yard touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers during the 2010 season embodied the player he was. Driver caught the ball at the San Francisco 39-yard line and broke several tackles en route to the end zone. “My picture of Donald, the memory I’ll have is the touchdown against the 49ers — with the throwback jersey and (where he) breaks Lord knows how many tackles,” McCarthy said. “If you’re looking for a picture of what Donald Driver means to your football team, what he means as a player, that’s the picture.

It’s Time For Green Bay Packers to Bring Back Donald Driver

Jack and Cheryl Burke danced a beautiful waltz to Im Kissing You. Jack chose 2012 as his most memorable year because thats when his son was born, followed shortly thereafter by his M.S. diagnosis. Pearl Street at the intersection with Dousman Street became Donald Driver Way on Saturday – SEE PHOTOS Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt presided over the festivities, with Pearl Street at the intersection with Dousman Street becoming Donald Driver Way. The famous receiver statue, which is now in front of Titletown Brewing but was originally dedicated 28 years and one week ago in front of the old Packers Hall of Fame across the street from Lambeau Field, was also refurbished and unveiled in Drivers likeness, with a No. 80 jersey and Drivers usual black-and-white receiver gloves securing the ball. Naming a street after Driver was a thought of Schmitts nearly a decade ago, when he began to appear with Driver at what became hundreds of community functions. Upon Drivers retirement this past winter, Schmitt said he brought it up with Driver again, who said it was not necessary, but the mayor continued to pursue the idea. Schmitt said he considered a street in the stadium district but chose the downtown locale, and not just due to the statues presence.

If the Packers have doubtadding White and/or Johnson to the 53-man roster, Thompson needs to at least consider asking Driver if he would like to come out of retirement for an extended period of time. I want to be absolutely clear: it is very doubtful that the Packers will bring Driver back because of his age (38-years old) and poor production duringhis final season in Green Bay, where undrafted rookie Jarrett Boykin was activated in his place at the end of the season. Even though Driver caught 743 passes for 10,137 yards and 61 touchdowns in his career, he played in only 13 games last season, catching eight passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns. A retired player like Driver wouldnt likely return to the field to be a no. 4 wideout and to sit on the bench. If Driver were to come out of retirement, hed likely have to be guaranteed an important role in the offense. But,if the Packersdidnt feel confident in the players they have now and feel they need to find awideout in free agency to help make up for their crucial injuries, then Driver should be the top guy on the list of names to contact.

At first, it felt like an awkward running joke. Then we realized Jennings truly had some issues with Rodgers’ leadership style. Comments made by former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver on ESPN Radio on Thursday morning shed some interesting light on the topic.

Donald Driver sheds light on Aaron Rodgers’ leadership

Driver caught just three passes as a rookie, and only had 37 career receptions through his first three NFL seasons. But he finally broke through as a starter and favorite target of Brett Favre in 2002, and went on that season to become the lowest-drafted Packer to play in a Pro Bowl in almost 20 years. Nothing has come easily for Driver, but his journey has molded him and made him into the man he is today. He’s a beloved figure in Wisconsin, with a Q rating to match, and the only thing that might top his body of work as a Packers receiver is the litany of good deeds he and his foundation have accomplished in Houston, Green Bay and other parts of both states. The Packers estimate that Driver has made more than 500 community appearances over his career, and his particular work on behalf of assisting the homeless and underprivileged children is a reminder of his own past and what he overcame. “I think you have to embrace that past, and your role,” Driver said. “This week is a gift that’s going to be given to me, but I haven’t had too much given to me my whole career.

Datone Jones: Bigger, Stronger, Faster

UCLA’s Datone Jones smiles through the bad times

(In fact, three of the NFC North’s four teams drafted a defensive lineman Thursday, for whatever that’s worth.) Second, Jones gives the Packers a physical specimen they haven’t had on their defensive line in a long time. At 283 pounds, he is big enough to play end in a 3-4, but at 6-foot-4, he is the Packers’ tallest lineman. (Jones was primarily a basketball player in high school before beginning football in 10th grade.) He ran the 40-yard dash at 4.80 seconds at the NFL scouting combine, and his 20-yard shuttle time of 4.32 seconds was the best at his position. “If you’re drawing up a defensive end,” defensive coordinator Dom Capers told reporters, “you’d like to have a guy with his kind of height and length.” Said general manager Ted Thompson: “Trying to add a little more speed to the defense we think is a good idea.” Put it all together, and the Packers have what they hope is an outside disruptor who isn’t named Clay Matthews . In his final season with the Bruins, Jones had 5.5 sacks and 19 other tackles behind the line of scrimmage. It would be disappointing if he didn’t win one of the starting defensive-end positions manned last season by C.J. Wilson , Mike Neal and Jerel Worthy . We’ve spent plenty of time this offseason discussing the Packers’ plans to improve against the read-option offense that ended their playoff run in San Francisco. The natural reaction is to say that Jones is an obvious antidote to that because he is big and fast. It stands to reason he’ll be better equipped to cover more ground and chase fast quarterbacks.

Cowboys’ Potential Draft Pick: Datone Jones, DT/DE, UCLA

Scouting Report Jones is a hybrid defensive lineman capable of playing in either Womens Datone Jones Nike Elite Jersey a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. In a 3-4, hed be a slightly-undersized five-technique, whereas he could potentially play any position along the line in a 4-3. Some people seem unsure of whether or not Jones is big enough to hold up inside or quick enough to rush off the edge. I think the latter question is a real concern, but Jones has what it takes to play as a three-technique defensive tackle. At 64, 280 pounds, Jones is considered a tweener who doesnt necessarily have the build of a prototypical defensive end or defensive tackle, and naive teams will hold that against him. The truth is that Jones is very strongplenty strong enough to play in the interiorso his weight shouldnt be a major concern. Plus, hes relatively lean, easily capable of adding 10 pounds if needed. I watched Jones against both Stanford and Washington State, and what stands out most to me is his quickness and hand usage inside. Hes simply too fast for interior linemen to block, and he parlays that quickness into penetration in both the running and passing games.

Datone Jones: Adds Quickness and Versatility to the Pack’s Defense

Friend(s) Email Yet another first-round draft pick is under contract. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Datone Jones has signed with the Green Bay Packers . Draft signings The New Orleans Saints ‘ Kenny Vaccaro and Detroit Lions ‘ Ziggy Ansah were the first of the 2013 NFL Draft first-round selections to sign. Follow all the moves right here. More … It’s a four-year deal worth $7.716 million with the first three years guaranteed, Rapoport reported per a source who has seen the contract. Jones was taken No. 26 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft to help fix Green Bay’s sagging defensive line. He was one of our favorite picks in the draft because of his versatility. Jones can rush the passer and is an effective run stopper who can move inside and out on the defensive line depending on whether the Packers want to use a three-man front or a four-man front.

Datone Jones says Kaepernick won’t ‘be able to run’ like in 2012

I had the Packers taking Jones in my final mock draft. It wasn’t just Jones’ performance at the Senior Bowl, either. Jones had a great senior year at UCLA, where he had 62 tackles, a whopping 19 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. Add to that his great combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds, plus his 29 reps in the bench press. Jones also obviously caught the attention of Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers , as the team selected him with the 26th pick of the first round last night. Thompson talked about what he liked about Jones in his press conference via Packers.com . “We added another good athlete and a guy with a little bit more speed,” said Thompson.

Datone Jones waits for his turn

One of the things about Datone, we played quarterback read [option] teams like Nebraska, Houston and Arizona State, Spanos told Doughtery. “He does a great job of bending low and attacking and being disruptive in the backfield. In all those games, he made impact plays throughout the game, created turnovers, safeties, fumbles. He plays with extremely low pad level.” Green Bay has made a major point this offseason of addressing its ability to play against the read option. Mike McCarthy sent his staff to visit with Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M and try to learn some things about the devastating multiple-threat offense. (Although it should be noted that A&M doesn’t actually run the read option, but whatever.) And the selection of Jones, with the much-maligned Erik Walden (somehow) getting a nice free-agent deal from the Colts this offseason, makes clear just how important Green Bay believes stopping the read option is this season. Perhaps it should be. Not only is the offense one of the more dangerous weapons in the NFL today, but it’s something that Green Bay will see plenty of to start the season.

Datone Jones, Green Bay Packers strike rookie contract

As the chart shows, Jones had 17 run stuffs, the highest total among well-regarded defensive prospects. (ESPN Stats & Information defines a run stuff as a tackle on a running play that resulted in negative or zero yardage.) So in Jones, the Packers have a well-sized and speedy defensive end who appeared difficult to block on the college level. When you look back at last season’s struggles against both the read-option and Minnesota Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson , you recall that the trouble usually began when the Packers were spread out and runners got to the second level. Theoretically, getting to the second level should be harder when you have bigger and faster players up front. Former Packers defensive back Charles Woodson implied as much after the team’s 45-31 divisional playoff defeat against the San Francisco 49ers , who rushed for 323 yards and had a total of 579 offensive yards. Draft impact: Packers’ Datone Jones

Jones had four sacks and 11 tackles for losses two years ago as a sophomore. A broken foot sidelined him last season, but he came back and was so dominant during training camp that coaches took to pulling him off the field at times so the offense could get work done without disruption. Yet, Jones hasn’t been much of a force this season and is without a tackle in the last two games. “A lot of times he is taking himself out of plays trying to do someone else’s job,” defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield say. Jones, smiling, explains: “All I can do is to make up for it in the next game. I have been through tough times.

But I’m just doing my job. “People looking in are saying, ‘Oh, he’s the No. 1 draft pick. He’s supposed to have 30 sacks already.’ But you have to remember what kind of defense we’re in; what we’re asked to do. I know everything about this defense. I know everything I’m supposed to do. I’m just waiting for my moment.” Early in training camp, it appeared there would be plenty of moments for Jones in 2013. Jones started the summer with a bang, making his share of flash plays on a daily basis.

Green Bay had marginal success through the air in the opening half against Baltimore, as Aaron Rodgers went 10-of-21 for 116 yards. But more than half of those yards went to either Jones or Cobb. On the other hand, Lacy enjoyed a productive first half with eight carries for 65 yards as a workhorse back, and they’ll look to ride on his back throughout the second half as go!! their offense immediately became relatively one-dimensional when Cobb went down at the end of the half. Rodgers won’t be able to easily find Nelson and Jermichael Finley in the second half, as they’ll be blanketed by a Ravens secondary that recognizes Rodgers is without arguably his two favorite targets. With the Pack leading 6-0 at half and nothing doing for the Ravens offensively, Green Bay will repeatedly try to build more of an advantage on the ground. This is only amplified by the loss of Jones and Cobb.

And perhaps that’s one of the reasons it was so remarkably impressive. Back in 2003, Brett Favre was 33 years old and still in the prime of his brilliant career. But Mike Sherman shifted the focus of the offense to Ahman Green and a dominant offensive line and then watched his team run wild. The Packers ran the ball 51.7% of the time that season the only season since 1987 that Green Bay has run more than it’s passed. And the Packers finished with 442 points, which at the time, was the second most in franchise history. Now, a decade later, a similar change could be taking place in Green Bay.

Packers offense running at a high level

Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 Eddie Lacy sets career-high in rushing yards vs. Ravens, much to his fantasy owners’ approval Related In partnership with SBNation.com By Dan Ciarrocchi Packers running back Eddie Lacy set a career high in rushing yards on Sunday during the team’s 19-17 victory over the Ravens . In a tightly contested game, the rookie tailback carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards, routinely ripping off chunks of yardage versus a Ravens front seven that is no pushover. Lacy’s biggest run came late in the game on a 37-yard scamper, as he was visibly effective toward the game’s end when the defense was gassed. Fantasy Spin: This is your feature back in Green Bay for the forseeable future. Fantasy owners are just fine with that, as Sunday’s contest marks consecutive games where Lacy has recorded at least 99 yards on the ground.

Jerel Worthy Done For Green Bay Packers’ Season

Spartans’ Jerel Worthy entering draft

Friend(s) Email Worthy, a second-round draft pick, was carted off the field in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings with a knee injury. McCarthy did not specify the injury. “You can ask him (about specifics) if he wants to share that with you,” McCarthy said, according to Fox Sports Wisconsin. Worthy started four games after being drafted No. 51 overall in 2012. He had 14 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Only B.J.

Bennett: A Worthy Conversation ESPN.com’s Brian Bennett talked to Jerel Worthy on Thursday about his reasons for turning pro, what led to his decision and his thoughts on Michigan State’s future. Blog A key cog in a Spartans defense that ranked fifth nationally in the FBS this season, Worthy finished with 30 total tackles, including 10 for loss, 3 sacks and two blocked kicks. He has been projected as a potential first- or second-round pick in the April draft. Worthy was Michigan State’s first All-American defensive tackle since Ronald Curl in 1971. He helped the Spartans go 11-3, winning the Big Ten Legends Division title and beating Georgia 33-30 in triple overtime at the Outback Bowl.

Jerel Worthy Says He’s Playing This Season

Jerel Worthy

Worthy’s anticipation reminds me of Millard. Obviously, a defensive tackle who can beat the ball into the backfield is going to blow up some plays, and Worthy has tackled a few quarterbacks in the act of handing off. More often, he has his blocker turned sideways before the play develops, disrupting the entire interior line. Once he has the edge on his blocker, Worthy does a good job ripping away. Opponents used fullbacks as extra pass protectors in the interior against Michigan State, but Worthy easily tosses smaller blockers to the ground. Worthy is a thick, low-center-of-gravity defender (translation: huge butt) who can get leverage on his blocker and shove him backward when he does not win the first-step battle.

Im going to play this year. Regardless of what time I do come back, whatever time it is, its going to be perfect for the team. Im trying to do my best to be back. We dont have a scheduled date as far as when Ill return. But this season, definitely. Worthy could be in such a hurry to get back because hes worried about playing time. The Packers went out and drafted a defensive end in the first round to fill the role Worthy was supposed to fill as a second-round pick last season.

Jennings’ Newest Rodgers Comments Just Make Things Worse

After an explosive Week 5 in London against the Steelers, Jennings will look for a rebound outing Monday night against a Giants secondary ripe for the picking. Jennings value will be tied to the likely announcement of Josh Freeman as the new starting quarterback. Should Freeman get the nod, Jennings value immediately shoots up into WR4 territory with upside. With the game coming Monday night however, it may be best to take a wait and see approach with the former Packer.

Greg Jennings: Brett Favre ‘told me the pros and cons’ of Vikings

The question, then, becomes who takes the reins for the Pistons in Jennings’ absence. With incumbent combo guard Rodney Stuckey’s season-opening status uncertain following surgery to repair a finger broken when he caught it in a car door , it’s likely that the about-to-turn-37-year-old Billups who spent the lion’s share of the last two seasons either injured or playing off-guard alongside Chris Paul with the Los Angeles Clippers will get the nod at the point, with re-signed score-first lead guard Will Bynum and rookie Siva getting more minutes at the outset, as well. (Unless, of course, Cheeks elects to leave Billups at the two , start Bynum at the one, and shuffle the likes of Caldwell-Pope, Siva and swingman Kyle Singler into the backcourt rotation as necessary.) [Yahoo Fantasy Basketball: Manage your team with free live scoring, stats and advice ] That’s not necessarily an awful outcome for Detroit Billups obviously has plenty of experience running the show, he and Bynum offer a fairly reasonable short-term backup plan, and anything that opens up more minutes for potential floor-spacers like Caldwell-Pope and Singler could help open the floor a bit for a Pistons offense that will likely be cramped at times when Smith and incumbent bigs Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond share the floor. But if Jennings’ return to full strength, speed and game readiness takes significantly longer than that three-week window, chemistry could be slow to develop among Detroit’s tantalizing collection of fascinating misfits. That could leave the Pistons who will match up against a solid seven or eight fellow playoff hopefuls in the first 10 games of their schedule behind the eight-ball in their quest to return to the postseason for the first time since 2009.

Vikings snatch Greg Jennings from division-rival Packers

So, he turned to a former Packers star who traveled the same path — Brett Favre. And Favre was honest, because he told Jennings heading to Minnesota wouldn’t be the perfect move. He told me the pros and the cons, Jennings told Jim Rome on Wednesday. “I asked him how it was over here. He told me some of things I would like and dislike. One of the things that caught my attention was what he said about the people. He said I would love the organization and I would love the people. He said the facilities weren’t the best, but the people are the best. The facilities didn’t make or break my decision, but the people would make or break my decision.

Hesaw a season-high 10 targets. Jennings was unable to break any big plays, and at one point he had an astonishing six yards on four catches. Things are going south quickly for the Vikings, and the Josh Freeman era appears to be on the horizon. Jennings’ value will be directly tied to the team’s third quarterback of the young season.

Clay Matthews To Miss At Least Four Games After Surgery

Clay Matthews: ‘I’m Not A Dirty Player’

The latest recurrence came in the second quarter in Cincinnati two weeks ago, forcing Matthews to sit out the second half. Unlike last year, however, when the injury was much worse and kept Matthews out of four games, it appears he wont miss a full game this time. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said hes optimistic Matthews can play as he follows the plan the medical staff set up for him. Matthews said that pulling himself off the field and talking to the doctors immediately when he didnt feel right in Cincinnati was key, along with what he termed a fortuitous bye week. Ive become a lot smarter, Matthews said. Obviously, a younger Clay might have pressed the issue and hurt himself even more. Unfortunately, his absence against the Bengals likely cost the Packers a victory. Matthews forced two of four straight turnovers in the first half that helped the Packers climb out of a 14-0 hole, but the takeaways dried up in the second half and Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton caught fire without Matthews steady pressure. With Matthews out, Dalton completed 13 of 15 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns a 152.9 passer rating in the second half as the Bengals rallied from a 30-14 deficit.

“So it affects a lot of the moves you make and that type of thing. We’ve had Cullen play with it up front and he still was quick and could make his moves. I think Clay would be able to do the same thing. You know, Morgan played in the secondary with it. So we’ll kind of have to wait and see what they say and hope for the best. And when we get him back, we’ll see what we can do.” In Matthews’ absence, the Packers will use Mike Neal and Nick Perry as their starting outside linebackers. This offseason, Neal converted from defensive lineman to a hybrid role of mostly playing outside linebacker. Neal picked up his first sack of the season in Week 5. Perry, a 2012 first-round pick, was benched in favor of Neal for the first time in his career Sunday against the Lions. But coming off the bench, Perry had two sacks and was more productive than he’d ever been.

Given the comments and criticism raining down on Matthews, is it any wonder that men are less likely than women to seek medical attention? Or that the suicide rate for boys and men is significantly higher than the suicide rate of girls and women? According to the research, macho men are half as likely as women to seek recommended medical care. Males are less likely than women to seek help for depression, and a full four times more likely to take their own lives. The phrase man up and the attitude that accompanies it have stifled our boys and men for far too long. Remember Junior Seau, the renowned NFL linebacker who committed suicide last year? Shortly after Seaus death, Sports Illustrated writer Peter King wrote , Ive been wondering about our part in all of this. The medias part, the hero-creating part, the Seau-as-superhero part.

Clay Matthews’ broken thumb diagnosed as a Bennett’s fracture

”The first part of getting over a hamstring strain is healing, and obviously I can’t control that,” Matthews said. ”But coming back, the final hurdle you have to overcome is mentally are you comfortable with exerting 100 percent effort or even more so. I wouldn’t put myself out there if I wasn’t.” In his fifth season in the league, Matthews still possesses the wide-eyed eagerness of a rookie. But that experience is building up in his brain, beneath those trademark locks, especially when it comes to dealing with his hamstring. Matthews was playing well with two forced fumbles and a sack against Cincinnati before departing. It was a joint decision with medical staff and coaches. ”I just told them where I was at and how I felt and moving forward what the smart thing would be,” Matthews said. ”At that point in the game, with that lead, too, I felt like it was the wise decision.” The Packers went on to cough up their 16-point lead.

Matthews suffered the injury in the second half of Green Bay’s 22-9 win over Detroit. Matthews picked up this team-leading third sack of the season against the Lions. Matthews also leads the team in forced fumbles. Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn’t have much to say about Matthews’ thumb injury when asked about it on Monday. “I’m hopeful it’s not season-ending,” McCarthy said. “I think we’re all hopeful, but you have to get all the opinions and make sure you always do right by the player.” The thumb injury comes just two weeks after Matthews suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Green Bay’s Week 3 loss to the Bengals . The Packers had a Week 4 bye, which gave Matthews time to heal before Sunday’s game with Detroit. With Matthews out for at least the next four weeks, look for Mike Neal and Nick Perry to be the Packers starting outside linebackers.

Clay Matthews: I’m ‘awesome player, not a dirty player’

If Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews were to try to play with the broken right thumb he suffered against the Detroit Lions last week even after having surgery Monday to stabilize the fracture the odds of him permanently losing grip strength would be relatively high. Three orthopedic surgeons who specialize in hand injuries all said the type of break Matthews suffered known as a Bennett’s fracture requires immediate immobilization and the prospects for long-term damage are high if the bones don’t heal exactly right. “The reason to get it to heal right is for 10, 15 years down the road so the person has a functional thumb that isn’t in a painful arthritic state,” said Barry Callahan, an orthopedic hand specialist at the James Andrews Institute. “To be able to pinch buttons and put your pants on, snaps, you name it. “You don’t really miss your thumb until it’s in a cast or something like that. You find out pretty quick when you’re asking your wife to button your shirt right.” A source confirmed a report from Matthews’ occasional workout partner, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, that the linebacker had suffered a Bennett’s fracture.
